Emotional Competence

​Play boosts a child’s self-esteem and self-knowledge. They learn what they like and what they don’t like. They learn their strengths and what they can work on with support of a parent or caregiver.

Through playing with peers, children learn empathy, perspective taking, and self-regulation. Again, through moments of conflict, children are taught how to be flexible and cooperate effectively. It’s important with turn taking to follow through so the child always knows that you will keep your word. Even if they seem to have moved onto the next thing, always offer the toy he or she was waiting for to communicate that, you will keep your word! ​
