Our now 4 year old son was diagnosed on the autism spectrum at 2 ½ years old. After aging out of all his Early Intervention services at 3 years old, he was suddenly placed into the school district and his meltdowns increased drastically. In addition to that change, we moved and he also had to cope with having a new baby brother. We have been so fortunate to have such an amazing, collaborative and innovative team of ABA and speech therapists through NKA. When our school determined that our son wouldn't be a candidate for augmentative communication (use of an iPad to facilitate speech), our NKA team said let's try it. So began an amazing journey that started with just 4 icons, evolving into our sons current program of word power 20 with multiple pages! School team was amazed and surprised to see how competent our son was and how he successfully is using his communication device to express needs and interact with others. Our NKA team collaborated to create an intensive program creatively weaving reading, spelling, speech and use of his device together. Our son's language has literally exploded and he is using combinations of speech, spelling and the iPad communication device to interact with us, tell us about his day and ask questions. We feel lucky to have found Nikki Komie and her team for my son. We have been with them for almost 2 years and have seen great improvement and progress in his development. All the therapists are experienced and professional. They work as a team and the communication between us and them are always open. If our son is having a bad day, they give him his space when needed and continue to give positive reinforcements until he is ready to learn again. They also act as an advocate for him in school, giving us advice before and after IEP meetings, attending IEP meetings when requested and conducting school observations making sure that the school’s goal for him is the same with theirs.
